Tom Sides

Tom is a partner and chair of the National Technology Transactions Law Group. His practice focuses extensively on technology, intellectual property, privacy and related commercial legal issues for clients in the energy, financial institution, health, forestry, information technology and telecommunications industry sectors.

Tom has significant experience negotiating complex systems integration, software development, collaboration, research and development, joint venture, distribution, OEM, alliance, reseller and technology transfer agreements. His experience extends to leading or advising on merger and acquisition transactions involving technology, IP and commercial legal issues.

In addition to technology and other industry sector clients that Tom has represented at Dentons, he has extensive legal and business experience in the software and telecommunications businesses. Tom’s unique combination of business and legal experience allows him to provide practical, business-focused legal advice to his clients.

Mark Beckles

With over 25 years’ experience in financial services, Mark has held executive leadership roles in banking, insurance, risk management and the non-profit sector.

Currently, Mark is the Senior Director, Youth Strategy and Innovation and has national responsibility for executing RBC Future Launch, a $500MM investment to ensure that young Canadians are ready for the future of work.

Prior to assuming this role Mark was Head, RBC Insurance Advice Centre, responsible for leading over 500 licensed insurance advisors who provide insurance advice and solutions to RBC Insurance clients across Canada. Mark has served as Regional Vice President, Retail Banking in the Greater Toronto Region at RBC

Mark is actively engaged in the community and has volunteered on many boards. He currently serves on the board of Harbourfront Centre, and is an Advisory Board member of the Canadian Multicultural LEAD Organization.

In 2011, Mark received the City of Toronto Bob Marley Award for his commitment to diversity and City Building. In 2012, he was recognized with the BBPA Distinguished Men of Honor Award. He was also recognized for his work in support of the Canadian Sickle Cell Network. In 2012 he received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for his community volunteerism. In 2015, Mark received the 2015 Harry Jerome award for Professional Excellence.

Mark holds an MBA in International Business from the University of Bradford and has completed executive programs with Richard Ivey School of Business, and Rotman Business School. Mark is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and holds the (ICD.D) designation.

Mark is married with three children and enjoys reading, jazz and football.

Mack is on a mission to change the world through code and prose. He has focused on the power of software ever since becoming interested in computer technology as a kid, and he has built software-based solutions for education, journalism, open government, and other industries. He also has a passion for storytelling, and has covered technology, urban affairs, and many other topics as a blogger and journalist.

Mack was a Product Development Manager at Questionmark Computing Ltd., where he led a distributed team of more than 40 software engineers and quality assurance testers in the development of a highly scalable, secure, SaaS-based assessment solution trusted by some of the biggest companies in the world.

In late 2016, He started Taproot Publishing Inc., a digital publishing company based in Edmonton to apply innovative software and new business models to local journalism. Fueled by the curiosity of our members, he’s working to ensure that important, quality stories about the community will continue to be told well into the future.

He is a dedicated community builder, and has given back to Edmonton through thousands of hours of board, committee, and other volunteer work for more than a dozen different organizations.

He has received numerous awards and distinctions over the years, including being named a “Top 40 Under 40” by Avenue Edmonton Magazine and one of “Alberta’s Next 10 Most Influential People” by Alberta Venture Magazine.
